CLEEN Foundation Organises Webinar to Curb Small Arms Proliferation in West Africa
The spread of small arms and light weapons has remained a major driver of violence across Nigeria and West Africa. In response, CLEEN Foundation brought together experts, policymakers, and peace advocates to unpack the problem and share solutions that work. Key discussions revolved around strengthening existing legal frameworks, enhancing border controls, and increasing cooperation among West African nations. Experts highlighted the importance of community engagement in identifying and mitigating risks associated with small arms. The role of technological innovations in monitoring and tracking arms was also examined, underscoring the potential for new tools to aid in curbing illegal activities.
Speakers explored how unchecked arms circulation fuels insecurity and weakens communities, emphasising the need for stronger regulation, regional cooperation, and citizen participation. The discussion reinforced that ending small arms proliferation goes beyond policy, but intentional actions towards accountability, coordination, and meaningful collaboration across all levels.
By the end of the session, participants agreed that reducing the flow of weapons requires both government accountability and active community engagement to build safer, more resilient societies.
