Free Movement: Idiroko Border Conversations Spur Community Action and Cross-Border Collaboration

At the Idiroko Border in Ogun State, CLEEN Foundation engaged traditional leaders across the Idiroko–Owode axis to introduce the ECOWAS Free Movement project and discuss their critical role in promoting safer and more orderly migration. The consultations underscored a shared consensus: effective implementation must be driven by inclusion, local ownership, and sustained community participation.

Building on this engagement, CLEEN Foundation facilitated a three-day training that brought together community groups, transport unions, and other key stakeholders to deepen understanding of the ECOWAS Free Movement Protocol and its practical implications. A major outcome of the training was the establishment of a Community Stakeholders Committee, with clearly defined roles and action points to drive local coordination and sustain advocacy efforts.

The initiative also included strategic engagements with border authorities on both the Nigerian and Benin Republic sides, strengthening cross-border collaboration and fostering dialogue on joint approaches to migration governance. These efforts have laid the groundwork for continued cooperation and more coordinated responses to mobility and security challenges along the corridor.
