CLEEN Foundation Drives Evidence-Based Advocacy with Magistrate Court Visits in Edo

As part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen justice sector accountability and human rights compliance in Edo under the IDEA/RoLAC project, CLEEN Foundation undertook a series of magistrate court visits across Edo State. These oversight visits aimed to assess the administration of justice, particularly in relation to pretrial detention practices and access to legal representation for detainees.

The visits provided a platform for engaging directly with magistrates, correctional service personnel, and other stakeholders in the justice system. They revealed several systemic issues, including the high number of awaiting trial inmates, frequent delays in court sittings, and limited access to legal aid—especially for indigent detainees.

Through these interventions, CLEEN Foundation facilitated better coordination between justice sector actors and contributed to the generation of evidence for policy advocacy on non-custodial measures and improved case management systems. The initiative reinforced CLEEN’s commitment to advancing rule of law and promoting humane and efficient justice administration in Nigeria.
