CLEEN FOUNDATION EXPRESSES CONCERN OVER THE RECENT FLOODS DUE TO THE COLLAPSE OF “ALAU” DAM IN MAIDUGURI
The recent collapse of the Alau Dam in Maiduguri has triggered severe flooding, leading to widespread devastation and prompting serious concern from numerous quarters, including the CLEEN Foundation. The disaster, which has caused extensive damage to infrastructure, homes, and agricultural land, underscores the urgent need for coordinated emergency response and robust preventive measures. The devastating flood that has ravaged the capital of Borno and its environs has become a National and environmental crisis, leaving many families displaced from their homes, wild animals let loose from the zoo, businesses lost, prison facilities destroyed, corpses afloat, and lives sadly claimed. CLEEN Foundation is deeply concerned about the downward spiral spurred by recent developments and calls on well-meaning humanitarian and emergency aid organizations to offer a hand of succour to the good people of Maiduguri.
In addition to responding to the immediate crisis, the foundation calls for long-term strategies aimed at enhancing community resilience. This involves investing in robust infrastructure, adopting advanced flood management techniques, and fostering community awareness about disaster preparedness. This disaster response plan should be integrated into state and national planning; it is possible to build resilience against future calamities.
In light of these happenings, CLEEN Foundation calls on the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in Borno State to collaborate and be more proactive in addressing the growing concerns, acting with precision and fleetness as the death toll continue to rise.
CLEEN Foundation commiserates with the entire state government, partners in the civil society community, friends, and the good people of Maiduguri as we jointly spotlight this issue and seek internal and/or external aid. We equally commend the humanitarian efforts of well-meaning Nigerians and private entities stepping in to ameliorate the situation.
The Board, Management and Staff of CLEEN Foundation condole with those who may have lost loved ones at this time. May their souls rest in power!
Signed:
Management
