Urgent Call for Action: Addressing the Conflict in Zamfara Amid Emerging Political Ties
Zamfara’s conflict, marked by a surge in violence, has inflicted unspeakable suffering on its residents. CLEEN Foundation is concerned with the alarming ratio of innocent lives that have been lost, homes destroyed, and livelihoods shattered. Equally disturbing are the unfolding revelations of political entanglements in the conflict. It has become increasingly clear that political elements may be exacerbating the violence, driven by ulterior motives. These emerging connections suggest that some individuals or groups may be exploiting the situation for personal or political gain, further destabilizing the region. Far beyond the immediate human suffering, this crisis threatens the very fabric of our society, undermining peace and stability in the region. The intertwining of politics and violence in Zamfara necessitates a robust and multi-faceted response.
Communities in Zamfara state live in constant fear, grappling with limited access to essential services such as healthcare, education, and clean water. The security situation remains volatile, with armed groups perpetrating violence against civilians, including kidnapping, looting, and destruction of property. Recent investigations reveal disconcerting ties between local political figures and the perpetrators of violence. These connections suggest that some politicians may be exploiting the unstable security situation to advance their political ambitions. Such actions not only undermine democratic processes but also fuel the conflict, exacerbating the plight of innocent civilians. Such actions not only fuel the conflict further but also undermine efforts to restore peace and stability in the region. Investigation is essential to uncover and address any complicity in the conflict. Those found to be fueling the violence for personal or political ends must be held accountable.
We strongly condemn any attempt to manipulate the situation for political advantage, as this further endangers the lives of innocent citizens and erodes public trust in democratic institutions. This conflict, which has caused immense suffering and loss of life, continues to fuel the humanitarian crisis in the region. The nexus between local conflicts and political influences must be addressed to ensure peace, security, and development for the affected populations.
We urge all political actors to prioritize the well-being of the people over personal or partisan interests. The exploitation of conflict for political ends is a betrayal of public trust and a grave injustice to the suffering citizens of Zamfara. We stand in solidarity with the people of Zamfara and call on all stakeholders to take decisive action to end the violence and political manipulation that continue to devastate the region. The time for concrete and inclusive solutions is now.
