CLEEN Foundation in collaboration with our stakeholders is bewildered with the loss of innocent lives, and our thoughts are with the families and communities affected by this heartrending incident in Zamfara State. The recent tragic events in Tungar Kara, Maradun Local Government Area, where at least 20 innocent lives were lost due to an airstrike by the Nigerian Air Force, underscore the delicate state of trust and security in the region. These incidents not only devastate communities but erode confidence in state institutions, further deepening divisions that hinder sustainable peace and development. The primary function of defense agencies is to ensure the safety and security of the people. However, incidents like the one in Tungar Kara highlight a significant gap in communication and coordination, which can lead to avoidable tragedies. To prevent such occurrences in the future, there is an imperative need to bridge this gap and foster stronger relationships built on mutual respect, understanding, and transparency.

Our ongoing project, centred on these vital objectives, comes at a time when the urgent need to bridge the gap between communities and the agencies charged with protecting them has never been more critical.

This tragedy is a solemn reminder of the stakes involved when gaps exist between public agencies and the communities they serve. The incident in Tungar Kara must catalyze change, ensuring such tragedies are not repeated. Moving forward, unity and collaboration will be the keys to realizing a peaceful and protected future. We admonish transparent and accountable communication in the process of debriefing on this matter. Community members must feel that their voices are heard and valued in the decisions affecting their safety and livelihoods.

Our Call to Action

CLEEN Foundation calls on the National Assembly and the leadership of the Armed Forces to adopt a people-centred approach in their operations. To achieve the objectives of our project, we urge:

  • Implementation of Independent Investigations: All incidents of civilian harm must be independently investigated to ensure accountability and provide closure for affected communities.
  • Review Existing Rules of Engagement: Security and law enforcement agencies must revise their protocols to prioritize the protection of civilian lives and property, demonstrating respect for human rights and adherence to international best practices.
  • Strengthen Effective Oversight: The government must strengthen oversight of the Armed Forces with to address the root causes of insecurity and rebuild public trust.
