FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CLEEN Foundation Condemns the Mob Killing of DPO Baba Ali in Kano State; Extends Condolences
The CLEEN Foundation expresses deep concern over the recent killing of Divisional Police Officer (DPO) Baba Ali of the Rano Divisional Headquarters in Rano Local Government Area of Kano State, who lost his life following an attack by a mob allegedly linked to the death of a suspect in police custody. This horrific act of violence against a law enforcement officer, irrespective of the circumstances underscores the urgent need for additional Citizens-Police Engagement on the justice Sector Reforms.
Mob justice has no place in the society and there is no responsible citizen that kills its own law enforcement officer. It is imperative that citizens understand the importance of legal processes and the grave implications of taking the law into their own hands. This incident marks a serious deterioration in the relationship between law enforcement and the communities they are mandated to serve. While the CLEEN Foundation continues to advocate for strengthened Civil-Security Relationship, accountability, and professionalism in policing, we emphasize that unlawful actions such as mob justice and extrajudicial killings of Law Enforcement Officer or any citizen whatsoever is not acceptable responses to alleged misconduct.
CLEEN Foundation extends its deepest condolences to the Nigeria Police, the bereaved family, and all who knew and admired him. We stand in solidarity with his colleagues and call for enhanced measures that safeguard the lives and well-being of those tasked with maintaining peace and security. His death is a regrettable development, and we express solidarity with those affected by this loss.
Prayer:
- CLEEN Foundation calls for an independent, transparent, and comprehensive investigation into both the reported death of the suspect in custody and the circumstances that led to the attack on the DPO. It is essential that due process is followed and that justice is pursued through lawful means.
- We urge the Nigeria Police Force to reinforce internal accountability systems, review its current community policing strategies, and ensure that human rights are upheld in all policing activities.
- An urgent review of the justice sector to reflect reforms in the Attitude, Behaviors and Character of Justice Sector Stakeholders,
No society can thrive where law enforcement officers and citizens are attacked with impunity. Mob justice is not justice — it is lawlessness in its most dangerous form
