Condemning the Renewed Killings in Benue State and Calling for Immediate Government Action

CLEEN Foundation strongly condemns the recent wave of violent attacks and senseless killings in Benue State, which have left scores of innocent citizens dead, many others injured, and communities displaced. These heinous acts are a tragic reminder of the continuing insecurity plaguing parts of Nigeria, especially the North-Central region, and the urgent need for a coordinated and sustainable response from government authorities at all levels.

These attacks are not only a violation of the right to life and human dignity but also a stark failure of the state’s responsibility to protect its citizens as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution and various international human rights instruments. Our thoughts are with the State Government, families and loved ones of the victims during this incredibly difficult time. It is crucial now more than ever that we rally together to support those affected and ensure they receive the necessary aid and compassion to overcome this tragedy.

We urge the Federal and Benue State Governments to:

  • Conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the attacks and bring the perpetrators to justice.
  • Strengthen community-based security structures in collaboration with local actors, traditional institutions, and civil society organizations.
  • We call on NEMA and SEMA to provide immediate humanitarian support to displaced persons and rebuild affected communities.
  • Enhance early warning and early response mechanisms to prevent further violence.

We also call on security agencies to improve their intelligence gathering, coordination, and rapid response capacities to ensure that communities are not left vulnerable to recurring attacks. Nigeria cannot afford to normalize the killing of its citizens. The lives of all Nigerians matter, and urgent action must be taken to prevent further bloodshed.
