CLEEN Foundation Expresses Concerns over Mass Displacement in Sokoto Communities: Urgent Call for Enhanced Civilian Protection Amidst Insecurity

CLEEN Foundation today voices grave concerns about the ongoing mass displacement of individuals in Sokoto communities as a result of escalating insecurity. The surge in armed conflict in the region has led to dire humanitarian consequences, disrupting the lives and livelihoods of countless families and exposing civilians to significant risks. The Foundation is alarmed by reports indicating that numerous communities are fleeing their homes in a desperate bid to escape violence. This displacement has not only created a humanitarian crisis but also intensified the vulnerability of the affected populations to further injustices and exploitation.

The repercussions of this displacement extend beyond immediate safety concerns. Abandoned homes and disrupted economic activities threaten the stability and development of the entire region. Families are facing food shortages, lack of shelter, and inadequate access to essential services, which aggravate the already precarious living conditions.

We, therefore, call on:

  1. The Federal Government of Nigeria: To immediately deploy a robust, multifaceted, and intelligence-driven security response to Sokoto State to degrade the operational capacity of armed groups, establish safe corridors, and enable the safe return of displaced persons. We urge a review and strengthening of the security strategy in the North-West.
  2. The Sokoto State Government: To prioritize the welfare of the displaced populations by providing immediate and adequate humanitarian assistance—including food, shelter, medical care, and protection. Furthermore, to enhance collaboration with community leaders and security agencies for localized intelligence and peacebuilding efforts.
  3. The Parliament at National and State levels: To exercise their oversight functions by summoning security chiefs and relevant officials to provide answers and accountable plans for restoring security and supporting the affected communities.
  4. Security Agencies: To redouble efforts, improve inter-agency collaboration, and adopt community-policing approaches to rebuild trust and effectively combat the threats in Sokoto.

CLEEN Foundation stands in solidarity with the people of Sokoto State. We reiterate that every Nigerian has the right to live in peace and security within their homeland.

Signed,
Peter Maduoma
Executive Director
